a1_03Richard Stephenson - Training Instructor

b1_03Richard is the owner of Animal Watchers Pet Resort.  He has successfully trained for and competed in agility for more than 14 years.  His agility experience began in 1998 when he decided to train the family’s pet Cardigan Welsh Corgi, “Abby” for competition.  Abby achieved her MACH 2 (AKC) at 5 ½ years of age.  Richard’s next performance dog, a border collie named “Jet”, also achieved her MACH 2 (AKC) as well as her MAD (USDAA) . His dogs have been nationally ranked and qualified for the AKC Nationals for three consecutive years.  He competed in USDAA events for three years and won three regional qualifiers. (See complete list of Richard’s dogs’ achievements on the “About Us” page).  In July, 2011, after much anticipation, Richard acquired his newest performance partner, a red and white border collie puppy named “Vision”.  With agility competition as the goal, Vision is currently being trained daily in a broad range of foundation skills including attention, basic manners and obedience, and tricks.  Richard has shared his enthusiasm for and expertise in agility with others by teaching advanced level agility classes for many years in the Dayton area.  He is  currently the instructor for all levels of agility at Animal Watchers. Richard is a full member of APDT, and an approved evaluator for the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen and S.T.A.R. Puppy Programs.

Marcy Smith, M.Ed.  - Training Instructor

right1a_03First and foremost, Marcy simply enjoys the company of dogs!  Her training experience began in 1970 with a rescue collie that became her first AKC obedience-titled dog.  Over the years, she has owned 15 dogs, half of which were rescues.  Marcy’s interest in dogs eventually led her to participate in TDI therapy work and the fostering and training of rescue dogs to help them become adoptable. Marcy sees teaching dogs tricks and stunts as an enjoyable way to build communication and lay a solid foundation for training.  Her current dogs include an 12 year-old corgi, “Rigby”, a 7year-old German Shepherd Dog, “Haven”, a 3 year-old Australian Shepherd, “Trip”, and a 4 month old border collie "Cheer".  Trip is active in therapy work, obedience, and rally.  Marcy is a full member of APDT, and an approved evaluator for the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen and S.T.A.R. Puppy Programs.  In addition, she is a Red Cross Pet First Aid and CPR instructor for Erie and Huron Counties.  Marcy teaches our basic manners and obedience classes as well as doing private instruction, and both in-home and in-kennel training.
